Is short term health insurance enough for college students?

Hi all, pardon this stupid question, but I’m a new grad student who’s working hard to support the education and living expenses on my own. The health insurance plan recommended by the school is pretty damn expensive for me – about $1,000 a year. That sounds pretty decent to some people, but I don’t think I can afford that, even if the school highly recommend everyone to take it. I was thinking about getting a short term plan through the same company that my school is working with. I’ll probably travel somewhere next month so I’d like it to be effective immediately till the end of the school year – May, 2010, so that’s about 6 months of coverage. However I really don’t know why short term plans are more affordable. Can someone explain to me the difference between a short term one and a long term, more expensive plan? And, will the short term plan enough for a ordinary college student like me? I don’t quite understand all the terminologies stated on the policy. Thanks a lot!
